The Inconsequential Transformer’s Movie Spoiler

Warning:  Like what the title says.  This is a major spoiler.  Still, I wouldn’t call it that because I don’t think that any review will keep anyone from watching the film.  If you are the type who hates knowing what the movie is like, then you have to stop reading NOW.

I am pretty confident though, that after reading this, you will want to see the movie for yourself more.

I have seen almost all of Michael Bay’s movies and I can say with a straight face that this is perhaps one of his best.  Being an 80’s kid, I may have my biases, since I have watched the cartoon franchise as a kid.  With the recent Spiderman movie not delivering as expected, I decided to take some of my excitement off of me to avert possible disappointment.  What followed was a movie experience I have not had since watching Tobin Bell as jigsaw get up of the floor for the first Saw installment.

Rating:

I don’t think anyone can find a movie that is perfect.  For always, someone will have something to say, whether it be bad or good.  Personally though, this is one kick ass movie.  I enjoyed it so much that I had goosebumps while watching and even after.  This is the type of movie which makes you call all your friends to tell them that they should watch it.  I may watch it again with them.  Two thumbs up, worth my money- movie.

Plot:

The plot was actually very simple.  But moviegoers should expect action scenes from the first few minutes of the movie to the last.  It is tightly packed with robots busting each other’s ass, kick arse driving, lots of cars being blown to peices and thrown around, and people getting stepped on.  A lot of bombs and guns are injected into the film, giving the feel of being epic.

The movie starts with Optimus Prime narrating about their world and how they are in the quest of a cube like object that spawned their world.  As you might have guessed, the cube fell to earth after it was ost amidst the wars going in their world.  The object has the power to make any machine into a robot like organism, not unlik the Decepticons.  Megatron, followed the object to earth, only to fall into the artic circle and be frozed there.  The government found him decades ago and keeps him frozen, while they keep an eye on the cube.

Fast forward to a few years after, we see Sam (Shia LaBeouf) who is this nerdy boy who is excited to get his first car.  He is trying his best to impress Megan Fox which is this hot girl from back at his grade school.  As seen at the trailers, he got the Camaro BumbleBee.  The scene at the Used Car store was just classic with the camaro doing it’s best to be bought by Sam.  It got there on its own for a reason we will find out later.  The Camaro was parked near a VW Beetle and it was funny but being an 80’s kid that I am, I think I liked the yellow robot to be a camaro.  BumbleBee even damaged the Beetle when the store salesman tried a hardsell of it to Sam.

As the plot goes on, Sam discovers that his car is a robot and BumbleBee has managed to call the Autobots to earth for the rising Decepticon threat.  The twists and turns of that discovery is something you guys must see.

The Decepticons are already in the planet, looking for the All Spark and their leader.  They decimated a military installation and stole files from the military which had the govenment prepare for war with countries like Korea and Iran.  While America tries to figure out the attacks and from where the threat is coming from, The Decepticons have figured out what happened to their leader.  The decepticons later came after Sam, he being the decendant of the explorer who discovered Megatron.  His grandfather was before pronounced crazy, and all details on the discovery were kept classified.  He holds the key to where the cube lies among the possesions of his grandfather, which I will leave off for now.

So BumbleBee becomes his protector and the whole Autobots against Decepticon Battle ensues.

What I have written is just a fraction of what happens in the movie.  Bay and the creators of the movie have managed to put some twists and turns to the story to make it engaging up to the end.  The movie was really an adrenaline rush, a literal roller coaster ride.

Points I liked:

The fact that the Autobots and the Decepticons had personality like in the cartoon was a feat I have to applaud the guys for.  The Decepticons were really bad ass and scary and their character was just so convincingly real.

The Autobots are awesome as well, with Optimus Prime being a real hero.  The robots were relateable, and people actually gasped and cheered in response to their appearance in the film.  I say that this is perhaps the best portrayal of a cartoon into a movie I have seen.  The characters were made more real without compromising the image we have known them carry when we watched the cartoons as kids.

The action was exhilirating, with cool use of slow motion which Michael Bay is known for.  It is kinda hard to put a spotlight into all the robots and the characters, since there are a lot, but the movie managed to do just that.

Points in the movie without the robots are not boring as well, filled with a few laughs every now and then.

Points I did not like:

There are still some cliche’s used in the movie like Nerdy boy likes hot girl and hot girl learns to like the geek back.  So that kind of gave made me frown a little.  The hackers’ characters were not portrayed as realistically and no convincing show of their abilities were made.  I actually felt that they have not contributed much to the plot except be there at the right moments.

All in all, I think these are excusable as the movie definitely delivers.

Signs of a sequel?

Definitely.  In the end, Optimus Prime calls other Autobots hiding in space to earth, while a view of Starscream going into space is also flashed.  There will definitely be a sequel, which makes me wonder who they will bring in next.

Things to look forward to:

  • The Face off between Megatron and Optimus Prime
  • Optimus Prime V.S. Bone Crusher
  • BumbleBee V.S. Barricade
  • Blackout V.S. Jazz and Ratchet
  • Frenzy.  Really, really cool new creation for the franchise.
  • One of the Autobots will die in the end.  No clues, you have to watch the movie.
  • Wait for the time when this word “brother” is used.  It will send chills to your spine.
  • Apple and Mac has been used a lot in the movie.  I wonder if hackers really use them though.  I imagine hackers using Linux more.

I guess that will be it for my review slash spoiler.  I am not an expert on writing reviews, and I like you to imagine that I am more of an excited teener who just came out from the theater bugging his friends to watch see the movie.  So there.  See it guys. :)

Well, given that OSX is Linux-based (as is Windows XP), choice of brand isn’t as big a deal anymore. :) Maggie and Glen get a LOT more face time in the novelization than in the movie, to judge from your comments and those of others.

    So…Brawl or Devastator?
