My Time Capsule: Promise of a Terabyte HDD

Ok, I was blog hopping this morning when I chanced upon a contest by Site Fever. They placed a whopping 1 TB Western Digital Mybook Hard drive up for grabs to anyone who blogs about how they would use such massive storage.

Honestly, I don’t easily get excited by contests like this, having had no experience of winning anything as far as I can remember. Still, looking at that 1 Tb of empty space did make me drool and fantasize about what I’d do if someone gives me such an indulging device.

So, win or no win, here goes my 1 Tb plan:

First of all, upon receiving the price, I know I won’t be able to stop myself from blogging about winning. I will take pictures and possibly a video of me opening the price. I might invite a few of my friends over for them to envy my new piece of ware. I will definitely write about how contests like this can really be true. It will surely make someone say “dude that’s just a $350 dollar piece of hardware”, why are you writing like you were just given the Holy Grail?” To which I will reply “I got one for free, beat that!” while I laugh loudly to rub my joy in their faces.

I will take pictures of the box and put the box in my bookshelf with a lot of my paperbacks. That way, I will always be reminded of actually getting something out of blogging my brains out.

For, my 1 TB of space, I will definitely give it a treatment commensurate to its power. I will check first if it is compatible with my existing hardware. I wouldn’t want the space underused just because I had a stinking set up. One of the first things I will do is to partition the drive so that I can use every aspect of it maximally.

I might install Linux and Vista on two of these partitions, just to indulge when I get a “Linux day” or a “Vista day”. I will surely get some software that will allow me to search its contents in a breeze. Maybe Window’s desktop search will do well for this. If not, I might have X1 on one of those operating systems!

Now, for the remaining space: I will definitely save a portion of my movies in it. I will save the old ones I spent a lot on that are now being worn down by age and moist and the atmosphere. I know they will have that as a cool haven for them. I will borrow a lot of my friend’s videos and copy them to my PC. I will save all my pictures in it as well, organizing them by date and event. I will digitize and rip all my CD’s plus my brother’s and my folks. I know I won’t have time to listen to them, but who knows when I might crave for something by Frank Sinatra right?

I will have a custom made bag for it so I can carry it as a portable storage wherever I go. I will keep my back ups in there as well for all my blog posts and net activity.

I will put it up for sharing in the office and at home too. I will have my siblings and some of my coworkers keep their stuff in it too for safe keeping. J This will be a helpful common space where we can share files (music and videos) we all like.

I have a lot of software on DVD’s and CD’s too. I know I will put them all here for safe storage. This amount of space will allow me to upgrade and not worry about cleaning my system again.

Lastly, If I fill it up (which I doubt) in this lifetime, I will have it wrapped it bubble wrap and placed in a vault for safekeeping. This will be a great time capsule to share with my posterity, a great way of making a record of our time, not only in writing but in all aspects of what is popular in our culture today. I think that my great-great grandchildren will enjoy learning about Britney Spears, or Lonelygirl15 or the iPod from this cornucopia of archived information.

Hahahaha, this is funny. I think all I can do is wish you luck. Will be waiting for those photos and video, though. They should be hilarious.
