Star in a Million: The Digg Map

A few days ago, Webmaster and blogger Brian Shaler , with the use of the newly released Digg API, mapped the users of Digg.  What resulted was a visual representation that was not unlike a map of the sky at night.  Looking like stars of different sizes, popular users of Digg are plotted on the screen with minute lines connecting them.  At the center of the map is Digg founder Kevin Rose whose star clearly outshines everyone else’s.

I have visited the map to test if I am a part of it.  There are literally millions of Digg users presently and the number shows no sign of slowing down in term of it’s growth.

Imagine my joy then when I found that in a small corner of the Digg universe was my username.  I am just amazed that I made it.  It might be a speck, but to me being there means I am at the moment a part of this growing community.

Check the map here.

As mentioned in the Digg article summary, maps of the internet and of the blogosphere acted as muses for this project. I wanted to break the mold a little bit, and add that touch of interactivity. The little ‘you are here’ sign was a touch that I knew would have an impact with many users. The map hits you with its complexity. Then, the note pointing you out hits you again, but with a grounding humility, as you look at the map again as a world that you are a part of — a very, very small part of.
