A List of Interesting Things: Starting the Day Right

Summer is almost coming to an end, and I cannot help but feel that the season just passed me by. I did get a lot of opportunities to spend summer outdoors, but some of my more memorable times were spent inside my home in front of my computer. Modern technology and the internet has really made the world smaller for all of us. With my PC, I can get to many places and be up to date with information I wouldn’t have access to otherwise.

With this information overload, the net surfer must learn to identify where to look for the more useful or interesting ones against all the clutter.

Here are a few of the stuff I have seen today that kind of made my day a little more fun. I hope that the following will also help you have a great start and minimize the time you’d have to spend surfing. Read on.

The following videos will definitely give you something to smile about:

Here is a video of Perseids meteors taken in a night telescope a few days ago.  Play the video and start wishing for that raise or dream date to come. :)

Wanna know a secret?  This video was from the Post Secret project that came up with some really interesting confessions from all over the country.  Guaranteed to send chills to your spine.

Much as I hate being preachy, this ad has some really graphic details on what smoking can do to our body. This will definitely make one think hard before puffing some smokes today.

Today’s great finds:

Bush to Karl Rove “I’ll be on the road behind you here in a little bit”

After his Deputy Chief of Staff announced his imminent resignation, President Bush answered with ”And so I thank my friend. I’ll be on the road behind you here in a little bit” during their august 13 broadcast. Though many are definitely wishing that Bush can take on this statement sooner, Karl Rove clearly expressed his support and admiration of the President’s leadership. The full transcript and video can be found in this story as well.

Teen Got Overdosed on Coffee

There is this interesting story of a girl who was sent to the hospital after drinking too much coffee. Seventeen years old Jasmine Willis took more than three times the recommended dose of caffeine in less than four hours, after being left by her father in their newly opened sandwich bar. She claimed it started to perk her up and made her felt good at the start. After continued drinking, though, she had difficulty breathing as well as palpitations. Now, Jasmine can no longer bear the sight of coffee and hopes people will learn from her mistakes.

Meet the Leopard Seal (Looks like the article has been deleted)

Paul Nicklen shared with us some very interesting photos of a leopard seal hunting and eating a penguin. Leopard seals are one of the largest species of seals in the Antarctica and are known to be formidable hunters. Their diet consists of penguins, squid and fish and they are the only seals known to eat warm blooded pre more regularly. Images of the Leopard seal at the movie Happy Feet shows how frightening these mammals can be. Though the fact that they serenade members of the opposite sex is a bit intriguing, there is definitely nothing cute about these fierce hunters.

Bullies Drown Six Year Old Kid (no cases filed)

Perhaps one of the saddest stories this week is about a boy who drowned after being bullied by his peers. Six years old Adam keeper was reported lost last Tuesday and was found a few hours after at the banks of Fishing Lake. Reports show that his three boys ages 7 to 9 stripped the poor boy and pushed him into the lake. Not knowing how to swim, the six year old did not surface and drowned. No cases were filed because all those involved were minors.

Six Reasons Why Apple is Either too Arrogant or Stupid to Lock the iPhone

Perhaps one of my most interesting reads of the day is this story from Hadley Stern on how stupid and arrogant it is for apple to lock the iPhone. He was able to come up with six reasons why this strategic move from apple may prove to be a downside. One of his premises says that it is but arrogance on the side of Apple to not care about giving their user’s freedom to customize the iPhone or at least open it to developers. He further argues that even though, the mobile phone kicks arse, it may suffer the same fate as OsX which still accounts for a minor share of the operating systems people use. I wonder then if Apple (or its loyal fanboys) can benefit from their arrogance in the long run.

PS3 Invades Korean Bank

Sony Computers Korea has decided to put up PS3 kiosks in a much unexpected location- the bank. I wonder what was running in the minds of the people behind Korea’s Sony when they decided on this very unusual location. Maybe it was to push an already painful irony, or perhaps they are hoping that this free “ad” can actually push some people to an unplanned withdrawal to buy their console. Regardless of their motives, this definitely makes going to the bank something to look forward to.

Another Yet Uncensored look at Lock Picking

The net never seems to lose anything that has to do with breaking into something, be it a password protected file or a literal lock. Through the years, I always find people drawn to articles on how to pick locks. Many times, I have clicked on these posts only to find them already closed or removed. This article provided some helpful primer on how to pick locks complete with illustrations. Really interesting, if you are the one who thinks breaking and entering is cool. As for me, I still prefer the old “kick the door down” move.

Wearing this Shirt in Public Can Cost You 150 Dollars

This man learned that the idea of killing people and hiding their bodies may not be funny to some. After wearing his favorite shirt with the print “Don’t piss me off! I am running out of places to hide the bodies.” David Pratt was warned risking a fine if he was ever caught wearing the shirt again. Though people had mixed reactions to whether his shirt was appropriate or not, the Peterborough City Council decided that the print was offensive, abusive, and insulting. Therefore it is definitely an offence under the Public Order Act, to wear it.

World’s Oldest Woman Dies at 114

The world’s oldest woman, Yone Minagawa, has died of old age at 114. Declared the oldest by the Guiness Book of World Records, Minagawa, shines light on the Japanese, again for their relatively longer life spans. Experts claim this had something to do with their traditionally healthy diet and their advanced medical care. Though the later is already true for our country, I think Americans are missing more and more of the former, as we are bombarded with less healthy meals everywhere. Her death makes remember that death is an inevitable part of life we all will succumb to someday. Makes me want to spend this day more wisely then. Perhaps, more than ever.

I guess that’s it for the day. I am wrapping up to make the most of my few minutes before work. That last story just made me want to take this day by the horns and make the most out of my passing time. I hope I can help you save some of your time browsing too. Much as I love my PC, nothing beats having the sun on your face with the birds chirping outside. Now, even sweating a little from the hot summer sun gives me joy. Reminds me that I am alive.
