The Aptera 2e, Form and Function Combined
When I first saw the Aptera 2e, I was quick in classifying it as another great looking vehicle concept that will never really have any real world use. With number of wild vehicle designs coming out every year it is very rare to find any revolutionary design that actually gets into mass production. When I heard that the vehicle will come out this fall, however, I felt that the car needs some looking into.
The Aptera is actually classified as a motorcycle with its three wheel and two seat capacity. The most amazing feature this car offers, however, is its battery pack which boasts of more than 200mpg and a 100-mile range between charges.
The designers of the Aptera made the vehicle a true eye candy. This form helps the vehicle increase its mileage by decreasing drag with its aerodynamic curves. Even if the vehicle is half as light as other cars out there, the Aptera is very strong. It claims to meet passenger car crash safety standards and could carry the weight of two elephants on its roof without a dent. Its body is made up of an impact resistant materials that is lighter than steel but three times as strong.
For those who are wondering on how the vehicle performs, the 2e can go from 1 to 60 mph in 10 seconds and can go up to 90 mph. The company aims to get 100,000 cars out by the year 2014 and they aim to do this by coming out with a gasoline version with a 660-cc engine as well as hybrid version in the coming months. The cars are slated to be sold exclusively in California first and depending on how well it is received, may start a well anticipated appearance in streets all over the country.
